Encyclopedia of Death and Dying: African Religions
I found this to be a very interesting article. When I was growing up, I saw some of these still practiced by older people. The customs lasted for a long time but are mostly died out now.

Poetry
Picking up the pieces
At some point in life
Someone will come along
Who will hurt you bad
Tear your heart in pieces
And let them fall where they
May without even a notice
Of where or how they land
Your whole body and soul
Seem to be falling
Apart as these little rips
And tears disintegrate.
As the shreds drop in slow
Motion to the ground
Your mind is gathering
Speed, wondering
What is going on here?
What is happening to me?
Then you realize
I’m not the only one,
And nor will I be the last
I have to get it together.
My life will never be the same,
But it just may get better
I have to try
And it can’t start
Until I begin
